Retractable Badge Clip: Convenience and Security

If you work in an office or other setting where you’re constantly pulling out keys, or having to show identification, it makes sense to have those items handy.  But, you don’t want them in the way, either.  Digging in your pockets or purse certainly isn’t efficient – but wearing them around your neck on a lanyard is just as much of a hassle.  One solution is to purchase a retractable badge clip, which will allow you to keep those items at reach when necessary, but out of your way the rest of the time.

One inexpensive choice is the mini retractable reel sold by hobbytoolsupply.  This has an 18-inch cord, which is long enough for most situations, and features a chrome metal casing, with a very strong alligator-style clip on the back of the case – this unit won’t slide off.  It includes a 1-in. diameter key ring, as well as a button badge strap (to insert through your ID or security card).

You should note, though, that the retracting mechanism on this retractable badge clip does not have an “out” position (at which it would lock until tugged to start the retraction) – instead, it is always tensed.  This is fine for most situations, when you’ll just pull the cord to use the keys or badge and return to your belt, but if you want to leave it extended, this is not the model for you.

Of course, it is not perfect.  The metal cable does last much longer than a nylon version, but will still rub and break eventually.  There have also been a few problems reported with the retracting mechanism breaking occasionally, due to the inner reel being made of plastic.  However, for its relatively inexpensive price (around $4), it is a much better and reliable purchase than a plastic/nylon model.

If you are willing to spend a bit more, Collectors Dice offers a similar model that is even more durable.  For around $8, you get a sleeker look (black and chrome), a more solid feel, and all-metal construction.  Like the previous model, the pull is not a nylon cord, but a metal chain which extends to 18 inches.  It has a very strong pull, so you’ll need to give it a good tug and be sure that it is clipped securely to your belt or waistband.  Overall, it should be a far longer-lasting choice.

So, when purchasing a retractable badge clip, remember that you get what you pay for.  Match your usage and weight needs to the model, and remember that a few extra dollars might save you a lot of hassle and headache in the future (broken cords, lost keys, etc.).
