Retractable Power Cord - Discover the Convenience

Corded power tools are great – but the long extension cords needed to work with them in your shop, garage, or work site, are NOT.  Not only are multiple extension cords a tripping and fire hazard, they are simply a pain to roll up and store over and over again.  A smart idea is to acquire a retractable power cord, which allows you to plug in one end, and then pull the unit to wherever you are working.  The unit contains multiple (usually four) outlets, so you can easily plug in whatever tools you are using at that moment.

One excellent choice for a retractable power cord is Bayco’s SL-755 cord reel.  With 25 feet of cord, housed in high-impact polypropylene, four grounded outlets and polarized plug, and 10-amp circuit breaker, this unit is light, and its slim design allows for easy storage.  It is fairly inexpensive (at around $30), but still quite durable.

A similar, but even more durable model is Alert Stamping’s 3525 AC retractable power cord.  With a powder-coated steel reel and housing, and a limited lifetime warranty, this unit is made to last.  Like the Bayco, it has a 25-foot cord, four grounded outlets, and circuit breaker; additionally, it has a power “on” light and a quick-release mounting bracket which facilitates mounting the reel on a wall or ceiling.  Both units have an easy-carry handle.  Alert Stamping’s model is around $40, but for the additional durability, it may be worth the additional cost.

Investing in a retractable power cord is the way to go.  Not only do you get multiple extensions in one handy unit, but you also get the convenience of being able to store your extension easily; just a tug is all it takes to get the reel started.  Walk the unit back to wherever you plugged it in and you’re done – no looping and hauling of heavy cord required.  For safety AND efficiency – consider purchasing a retractable power cord.
